Welcome to the site dedicated to Dendrochronological Studies in Bulgaria

We have created it to present in brief the scientists, research projects and topics, study sites and species and active laboratories.

In several brief sentences:

We are interested mostly in the study of the influence of climate-related topics, disturbances, forest dynamics and pollution on tree rings. You can read more about the study topics in the Research set of pages.

NEW: In the period 2-4 July 2009 in Velingrad, Bulgaria there was a meeting to discuss "tree ring studies" in South-Eastern Europe. The topic was "DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSES OF CLIMATE CHANGES IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE". Please, follow the link to read more.

We have worked mainly with those species:

Coniferous:

  • Picea abies
  • Pinus sylvestris
  • Pinus peuce
  • Pinus heldreichii (also known as Pinus leucodermis)
  • Pinus mugo (ssp. Turra)
  • Abies alba

Deciduous:

  • Fagus sylvatica
  • Quercus ssp.- mainly Q.robur

The study sites are in the mountains of Bulgaria (including treeline) as well as in valleys (Quercus ssp.).

Active laboratories are the one in the University of Forestry and in the Institute of Forestry. They are equipped with basic tools for cores collection (increment borers), and tree-ring measurement (tree ring widths).

Please, follow the links to the left to learn more about our work.
